Lens beats Marseille 2-1 in Ligue 1 thriller

Gradit's late goal seals victory for Sang et Or

RC Lens edged out Olympique de Marseille 2-1 in a thrilling Ligue 1 encounter at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis on Saturday evening.

The hosts took the lead through Wesley Said in the first half, but Marseille equalized through Cengiz Under just before the hour mark. However, Lens had the final say as Facundo Medina's cross deflected off Chancel Mbemba and into the net in the 88th minute.

The victory moved Lens up to third in the Ligue 1 standings, while Marseille remained fifth.

Match highlights

Lens started the match brightly and took the lead in the 17th minute when Said fired home from close range after being set up by Florian Sotoca.

Marseille struggled to create chances in the first half, but they came out with more purpose after the break and eventually equalized in the 59th minute when Under curled a superb effort into the top corner.

The match looked set to end in a draw, but Lens snatched a dramatic victory in the 88th minute when Medina's cross deflected off Mbemba and into the net.

Reaction

Lens coach Franck Haise was delighted with his team's performance.

"We played a great match," he said. "We were aggressive and we created a lot of chances. We deserved to win."

Marseille coach Igor Tudor was disappointed with the result, but he praised his team's fighting spirit.

"We played well in the second half and we created some good chances," he said. "But we were unlucky not to get a point."
